Rely-Ability services support people to live independently in their communities. Rely-Ability provides mental health recovery oriented services in the Hunter region and provides services to plan-managed and self-managed participants with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). We offer one to one and group-based support options at our centre-based operation in Tighes Hill (Creativity Hub) and elsewhere in the community.
Rely-Ability generally bills from the core support budgets in people's NDIS plans but can also utilise capacity building and other budgets. If there any questions please contact us to discuss and we can clarify what the options are for you.
Our creativity hub is a relaxed, fun environment where we provide our clients with specialised support. Our carefully selected staff are not only peer workers in the mental health field but possess relevant industry experience in the creative arts with skills to help clients achieve their creative goals.
We provide the support workers, art supplies, technology/software and music equipment in a safe and supported environment. We also have an espresso machine which was left over from when the property used to be a cafe, and while most staff and clients enjoy a quality made cappuccino some of our clients have also enjoyed learning how to use the machine and make coffee for themselves.
Rely-Ability places clients' choice and control front and center in its philosophy. Since the very beginning of Rely-Ability in 2015, we have understood the importance of clients having opportunity to lead decision making about their support. From a peer perspective we know how important this is. A range of programs are currently available thanks to our clients who requested them. As we are a small service we are able to make decisions quickly and set up programs at a clients' request. Our tennis, animation, graphic design and creative writing programs are examples of co-design at its best!
We host art exhibitions and live music performances at our gallery space in Tighes Hill, Newcastle. All art and musical entertainment on the day/night is provided by our staff team together with our clients.
These events have been placed on hold due to the CoVid-19 pandemic and will resume when it is safe to do so.
Rely-Ability provide an abundance of resources for clients to make these events a success.
When you choose us, you join a community. We encourage engagement in sport, healthy eating, gardening, social outings, attending health appointments and many other types of support. We provide clients with a wide range of activities such as tennis, bike riding and swimming. We always aim to cater to clients needs, so if there's a program you'd like to see on offer, just let us know and we'll look in to providing your request.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Newcastle majoring in Community welfare & the Human Services, and Philosophy. Michael has worked in the public welfare sector for over fifteen years in child & family welfare and non clinical mental health services. Michael is also a passionate musician/songwriter with over twenty years experience performing in concept shows and similar experience in sound production. Michael is passionate about mental health, drawing on diverse life experience and skill sets to support clients to achieve the goals and outcomes they set out to achieve with Rely-Ability. Michael created Rely-Ability about seven years ago after identifying a need for a different type of mental health service, one that was more tailored to meet the needs of mental health clients rather than being a 'general' disability service. Michael also acknowledges the value of lived experience which is why Rely-Ability's largest program, the music program is peer-led, meaning all of the staff involved bring their own lived experience of mental health to their roles.

For example, our sound production specialist may also support a client to participate in playing tennis or going for a bike ride. Programs are ever changing too. Many of our programs have been designed by clients. For example, the animation program was requested by a client, and recently a client requested to go on a musical performance tour from Newcastle to Byron Bay, which is a new program that is being organised in the coming few months, and will involve some of our most skilled and talented clients and musical staff.
